As hard as I try I just have to pronounce the 'g' and it does not go over well - other than that, it's one of the top 5 cities I have ever visited, the perfect mix of old + new, country + city, and just stunning.
A total surprise how much I liked this town and how quickly
I would go back to visit – I knew Scotland was green rolling hills and
beautiful but never would have thought Edinburgh is so magical and so easy to
get to. The amount of good restaurants and food is impressive – all local and
farm to table and just worth visiting for that, and of course the Hendrick’s
Gin. Meat, cheese, butter - stock up! The castle itself is out of a storybook
and towers over the city in a surreal way, worth a hike to the top and wandering
down the backside of town towards the water and George Street – while the
miracle mile is pretty, its too crowded and touristy and not really great once
you get through the first few blocks.
We stayed out of the touristy area, in the newer area at the B+B Edinburgh
which I really liked, beautiful library and stunning views of the castle. Easy
to get to from the airport tram as well.
Be careful on the stairs though as we did spend some time at the Edinburgh
emergency room – hot doctors dull the pain and
no bills to worry about!

Must Dos:
- I wish we had more time to venture
out of town because the countryside looks stunning but next time! We did head
to Duddingston Village to eat at the Sheep Heid Inn which was our favorite meal
and night – it’s a cozy pub from the 14th century that the Queen
herself visited a few weeks before us. Food is decadent and drinks are amazing,
plan to stay for a few hours, especially in winter when its so cozy – sneak
down the street to the public garden that overlooks a small pond – so pretty!

- Shopping: find a nice place to buy
some cashmere wraps and scarves, also good quality wool. There are a lot of
touristy ones on Rose Street but there is a nice one on Princes Street called
Hector Russel which has really nice options. Made me want to start knitting
after finding a lovely knitting & haberdashery (such a great word) store,
the McAree Brothers.

Day or Night, a good time |
- Restaurants & Bars:
- Cairngorm Coffee Co. has two locations, one great for coffee and breakfast and the other with the most delicious grilled cheese
- The Edinburgh Lard for lunch
- Indigo Yard has great atmosphere and fun food & drinks
- The Balmoral Hotel for cocktails, including the new Scotch bar. Go at sunset for beautiful views right outside along the river
- Rose Street has great bars and live music - we walked into 1 bar that had students playing local music all night - it gave me goosebumps
